HOME-BOUND & HUNGRY RECEIVE FOOD FOR PETS
Well-Being Group has joined forces with H.O.P.E. Animal Foundation and other local agencies such as Fresno Madera Area Agency on Aging to support a much needed program called AniMeals. “When we heard that area seniors were feeding their delivered meals to their animals because they couldn’t afford pet food, says Kris Payne, Director of Community Relations, Well-Being Group, we just had to do something!”
AniMeals is in need of pet food, particularly senior food for both dogs and cats. The program offers free pet food for the dogs and cats of elderly or disabled people throughout Fresno County. For many homebound individuals, a dog or cat is more than a pet; it can provide friendship, joy, and a reason for living. The program, works in cooperation with Meals-on-Wheels. The pet food that is donated to the cause is given to the Fresno Madera Area Agency on Aging- they use this food and give it to low-income seniors who have a pet and need assistance with feeding it. Traditionally, donations are received from broken bags in distribution stores, or warehouses such as Target, Costco. But those donations are also low this year. In fact, the FMAAA has had talks to suspend the program due to low-or no such donations.
“It only makes sense,” says Kris Payne, Director of Community Relations, Well-Being Group, “that the people who are having a hard time buying food for their families are also going to need help getting food for their pets too. This is a great way for us to work together to help both humans and animals all at once—it’s a win-win situation.”
